I tried menstrual cups for many years (Eva, Diva, Moon) and they ALWAYS hurt to insert and hurt to remove. I just tolerated it for a long time until eventually I gave up on cups entirely. I finally decided to try a disc and knowing my history with cups, I went for the smallest disc I could find. The Saalt Small Disc is totally pain-free to insert and remove! Total game changer. I’ve used the diva cup in the past (have an IUD so can’t use it now) and have also tried the flex discs. No diagnosis but I suspect I have somewhat of a prolapse and/or recto/cystocele. Due to the discomfort of the diva cup and the flex discs, I was wary of the saalt disc. But I am about to embark on a 1-month long backpacking trip in the mountains and didn’t want to carry tampons in AND OUT, esp with this perimenopausal endometrium. “Luckily,” I got my (very heavy) period a week before my trip so I could test this disc out. It’s perfect and I’m so thrilled. A bit of a learning curve, but I’ve been able to go on a long sweaty hike and also lift heavy weights (including back squats and deadlifts) without any leaking or discomfort. Learn about “auto dumping,” by the way, so it’s not a surprise. In my minimalist backpacking gear list, this is a new essential. (I’ll probably try the regular size when I return—tried the small for my suspected prolapse but idk that it’s necessary.)
Medium was too large (would not tuck behind pubic bone, no matter how hard I tried it just laid parallel in the vaginal canal and slid right out when I beared down at all) but the small fit perfectly. Easy enough to insert and remove, even when it twists around inside you and the notch isn't easily accessible. The texture is smooth and the wavy pattern is only textured on the inside of the disc. The basket is pretty firm and thick, and immediately "pops" back into place when you push it down. For this reason I can't imagine it would be very comfortable for penetrative sex, but it staying popped open inside you probably means the capacity it can hold will be more consistent vs a disc with a basket that gets smushed. I just wish there was another disc out there with a similar diameter to the small but a very soft and thin basket like the flex reusable!
The Saalt disc in small is my first reusable menstrual product that is used internally and it has been a breeze! Sorry but this is a long review – I found the idea of discs really intimidating so I have noted some things that worked for me in the hopes others will find it helpful.
Background:
For the record, I am a 20-year-old virgin and I have always had a regular, light-medium cycle. I have a low cervix which makes tampons really uncomfortable for me so pads have been my go-to for everything - until now. Watching and reading about discs really helped me be informed with the switch and made using it easier in the beginning - highly recommend doing this when you purchase.
Apparently, the regular size fits disc most but considering my experience with tampons, I went with a small and relatively firm disc (I really liked Period Nivana’s comparison chart for this). The firmness was important to me because I wanted to know what the disc would pop back into place once inserted. I know that choosing a smaller disc can create issues but I have had no leakage in the 12 hours of use, have found the figure-8 insertion and removal intuitive, and have a little auto-dump* with bowel movements which gives me some peace of mind that it will not overfill with its smaller, 30 ml capacity during the day.
Journey:
In an effort to reduce cost and be more environmentally sustainable, I made the switch to cloth pads (the Pixie Cup ones in regular) 5 cycles ago and although they were great quality and very comfortable to wear, I found that they slipped when I did intense exercise and they were very difficult to clean. (I am an avid runner, hiker, climber etc). This, combined with my apprehension towards the dreaded vacuum / sucking effect associated with cup use has led me to the menstrual disc world.
Experience and tips:
I have only been using the disc for 3 cycles but so far, I have found it brilliant.
Some advice with insertion would be to pinch the top to make insertion easier and feed it in whilst continuing to pinch it (use two hands if this is difficult). Directionally, you want to push the disc back towards your tailbone during insertion and then scooping / tucking it up and under the public bone when you cannot go back any further (i.e. you encounter resistance). I think my cervix is slightly anterior so ‘scooping’ it with the disc ensures that it is properly caught in the basin which prevents leaking. The rim just pops back into place automatically so no need to adjust like with cups.
Also, I haven’t seen many people talk about this but in terms of correct placement, if you engage / suck up your pelvic floor muscles like in a kegel, the fit of the inserted disc will usually be perfected – for me, any misaligned or crumpled parts of the rim and basin will pop back into place with a airy / bubbling noise. If the disc position doesn’t amend itself, I simply reinsert. Similarly, bearing down during removal helps me find the notch (which can rotate but not severely) and I pinch the disc during removal for ease and to avoid mess.
To avoid spotting after insertion, just use a finger to wipe any leftover blood around the bottom of the disc / canal. On my heavy days, I double up with a cloth pad.
Accessories:
Some accessories that I have found massively helpful, especially with travelling and sharing communal living spaces, is the Saalt Travel Kit. I sanitise my disc at the start and end of my period with the collapsible cup & microwave, storing it dry in a breathable bag. Then with each use, I rinse it out with the mild soap and cold water to maintain its hygiene. I try not to change it in the day, but I use wipes / sanitising spray for my hands and disc if I am in a public bathroom / no access to water; I also take the small peri bottle with me to get rid of any chunks.
Conclusion:
If you are on the fence about making the switch, just do it!

*For me, the auto-dump tells me I have found my goldilocks menstrual product. It only dumps during bowel movements, not when I pee, sneeze, cough etc and is elsewise leak-free.
It might be a little early for me to review, but I don’t care. I’ve been using cups and discs for a few years now, but always found myself migrating back to tampons and period panties out of frustration. Cups ALWAYS leaked and if they didn’t, the suction was painful enough for me to not use them. The last disc I’ve used has been the Ziggy, which worked decently but was HUGE, uncomfortable and always caused a mess.
I took a leap and ordered Saalt small and regular discs before my period this month. I’m on day 2, and I am OBSESSED. The first day I had a lighter flow, so I used the Saalt small, and it never leaked. It was so comfortable it almost seemed to lessen my cramps. No added pressure, no painful suction, easy to insert and tuck into place.
Overnight I knew my flow would increase so I used the regular, and it was perfect for like 10 hours while I slept! No issues in the morning. Have been using it all day again and it’s so lovely. Totally worth the investment! 🙌🏼
I have been trying to find an ineternal reusable product that actually fits my anatomy. Most cups, even low cervix cups, are simply too long and one that I did finally find that was the correct length wouldn't open no matter what I did. Another, which came at the same time as my Saalt disc pressed on my bladder uncomfortably. I was frustrated & honestly a little intimidated by the size of the disc, especially since cups were too big.
BUT the Saalt disc small fits (barely, but it fits)! It was easy to insert and really comfortable! I didn't notice it was in and could easily have forgotten it was there at all! The only time I noticed any blood was shortly after I first put it in, but since it was such a small amount of blood, I don't think it was due to the disc or placement.
I love the packaging - not only is it beautifully designed, but it eliminates senseless plastic waste. The disc itself is a beautiful soft coral color and so soft. The bag is beautifully designed as well! Overall, a well-designed & asthetically pleasing product!
I plan to continue using my disc. I wish there were more colors in this size because I'd have to splurge and get them, too!
When I first opened my package, and seen the size of the Saalt Small Disc; I really thought there was no way this was going to work for me! I got it this morning, and all day, I have the most comfortable experience EVER with a disc. I tried reusable discs, (Flex Cup, and SoftCup) but they always slipped out of place, and caused leaking. They also put pressure on my bladder, and made urinating more difficult. For those reasons, I wanted to givethe Saalt Small Disc a try! I never imagined it would work, It looks like it is for a teen, how Small Cups are recommended for teens. Then I had to remind myself that cups and discs are not sized the same! The fit is perfect! It does not slip out of place, and it no longer causes any pressure on my bladder. I also have a low/average cervix. Very low the first 3 days of my period. This disc is going to be a game changer for me. If you are dealing with any of these issues, don't be scared to try the Saalt Small Disc. It looks like it could never work, but I have finally found my Period Nirvana thanks to this disc. I love it so much, already!
I’m more drawn to discs since they’re less ~invasive~ than a cup but still get the job done just as well. It’s so much easier for me to get it in than a cup too. Easy to use, doesn’t leak (just use backup just in case!). Mine does shift on me a bit, so I’ll have to dig for the little notch so I can grip it to get it out. This size is perfect, I’ve used discs before that were too big and not firm enough to stay leak free. Love this disc so much and totally recommend it to anyone interested in discs!
This Saalt disc is the second disc I've tried, the first being the Lumma L. The Lumma leaked and was just slightly too big to stay tucked, so it would randomly auto-dump. Not great. The Period Nirvana quiz suggested the Saalt disc regular so I ordered from the Period Shop. Delivery was quick, and I love my new disc! I'm on day 2, my heaviest day, and other than the expected deluge when waking up this morning, I haven't had a single leak all day! It's so soft and I can tuck it up higher than the Lumma so it's more comfortable. The finger notch is great and for me has made removal less messy. I highly recommend the Saalt regular disc.
I have to say I love this disc. I have finally found a period product that works for me and stays in the correct spot all day with no leaks. I have tried others and they seem to slide out. But this smaller disc tucks behind my pubic bone nicely!
Well I had been wanting to try either a cup or disk and went for a disk based on the nirvana quiz. I finally found one at target and bought it super excited inserting it was super easy for me felt super comfortable no leaks it did auto dump once and then I decided to clean it out and to my surprise I COULD NOT reach it I thought it’s my first time I might be a bit nervous I’ll let it go for now and try later. I watched a couple of videos asked for tips and tried 3 more times with no luck. Unfortunately I ended up in urgent care and even the Dr. had a hard time getting out she finally had to use some forceps to get it out. Not sure what went wrong. I did love it but now I’m super scared to try it again. I might just have to wait for the Hello one to be back in stock to try that one.

Oh goodness this is not good! That is one expensive way to find out you have a high cervix - I'm sorry you had that experience. The one thing about discs if you're new is that you can tuck it up into place easier than you can retrieve it when there are no strings or loops to help. It was a scary experience but I'm glad you're ok. If you do decide to try a disc again the Hello Disc with the tab dropped works for a higher cervix, and the Lumma Disc High with a string is also high cervix friendly. -Kim

I have been curious about alternatives to tampons for over a decade and have never found anything that worked. Mainstream cups, discs, disposable discs, they just didn’t work and always leaked forcing me back to tampons. Last cycle was my latest attempt to get my disc to work right and I found my self researching what I was doing wrong. A Reddit thread sent me to a period nirvana education video and subsequently the quiz. I discovered that I wasn’t doing anything “wrong”, I was using the wrong sized disc! I had no idea the world of disc types, let alone sizing.

I got my period in 5th grade and used tampons immediately. I started to use this cup in 8th grade. I am 18 now, I boil it after every use with a dash of vinegar, my periods have been shorter seem to have less cramps. I totally recommend not only is it cost effective but totally helped with my cycle!
First time using a disc. Last cycle, I successfully used a cup for the first time, after giving up years ago out of sheer frustration. I had such a hard time figuring it out, and I felt defective and broken, because even when I did, it was uncomfortable. Last time, I managed to make it work, but it was still... not comfortable. I figured it would be a situation like with pads or tampons, where I would just have to get used to the discomfort.
I put in this disc, and literally forgot I had it in until I went to the bathroom and noticed my pad had zero blood on it. Completely forgot.
Now, taking it out was a bit of a mess, but I knew that there's some... learning curve there, so that's fine. With a 12 hour wear time, there's no reason why I can't leave emptying it until I'm at home, at least until I get some practice.
Absolutely intuitive to insert and place though, and for someone who feels a tampon the whole time, despite everyone telling me that's not "a thing" - that's amazing.

REALLY HORRIBLE. I am never trusting this site. I thought that since this was a small buisness I could trust the reviews on the products they sell but I was VERY wrong. Without a tab or string to pull the disc out it took me 30 minutes to get out and it was very painful. I almost had to go to the hospital to get it removed. Do not buy this product and dont trust this site.

So, firstly I absolutely love the concept of a disc. I have been a cup user for years and enjoyed my move away from disposable products, but since having my baby the cup just didn’t work and I had two sizes to try.
As I did some research I found the world of discs. I first tried the hello disc which was brilliantly designed and I loved the loops for easy removal but it just didn’t fit me and kept popping out. This was then confirmed when I bought the Saalt disc small which fits perfectly and is super easy to insert and get in the right place! I don’t even auto dump most of the time which for me is not a bad thing.
HOWEVER… (and this is sadly why it is 3 stars) the notch is basically useless for me. I can’t get any grip on the notch and like period nirvanas review it just bangs on my pubic bone. So I have to reach in and hook over the edge but… man it feels far up and it’s hard work to get out.
I will keep using it because I don’t like disposable products and it does hold so much more which is fab, but I am hoping hello disc come out with a smaller size so those of us needing a smaller disc can also have easy removal with the loops!
So all is all it’s ok, good size and lovely texture and bag etc but removal is difficult and not ideal. I wouldn’t recommend the notch style removal to someone that is squeamish.
I was extremely nervous after using tampons and pads prior to this but a friend recommended a disc. I was prone to heavy periods and bleeding through pants and pads very easily.
I was shocked at how much of a difference this was. It was very easy to use and out of 5 days i only had leakage one day and it was mild.

I discovered reusable discs thanks to Period Nirvana’s educational videos on tik tok. I started using menstrual cups but had problems with the suction, which is why I decided to try a menstrual disc. I tried the Saalt small disc and even though it was great, I sometimes felt that the fit was a little off. I ordered both the Saalt regular disc and the Hello Disc and I am in love with both. I have not felt any spotting, discomfort or insecurities while using them and they have actually made me anticipate my periods! I also bought the Spot and it is a game changer when I remove my discs and cleanse them. I am honestly very grateful for Period Nirvana, Kim Rosas and their educational videos.

the saalt disc is not beginner friendly. I would strongly advise using a disc with a string attached first! That being said, I used this as secondary to HELLO DISC and this is great to use on my heavier days. I never leak and my capacity lasts longer than the 12 hours. My vagina muscles, unfortunately, rotate discs and for the first time in 3 months, my disc was stuck! No, I didnt panic but it was challenging to get it out. At this time, I wish I had a string to pull it down! I was nervous due to having a IUD and not wanting to displace it.....however, so far so good. Defintely will stick with strings from here on out...
These are very easy to insert. Most of the time removable is also very easy. However sometimes the disc shifts a bit on me so it takes a little more maneuvering to get it back out. I don’t have leaks and can’t feel it when it’s in, so it’s still a great product and would still recommend. Seriously so much better than tampons!
Over the years I have used three different cups and one brand of disc. None were ever quite right and I often dealt with leaking, bladder pressure, and internal discomfort. The saalt disc is the one I've been searching for- fits well with no discomfort at all. I've had some leaking but it is easy to fix with a little readjustment. If you have a low cervix and want something comfy and low profile, this might be your best bet. I'm so glad I tried this one out because I finally found my Goldilocks cup!
I have three kids, and after each one, my cervix got lower and lower, to the point that I can’t even use tampons anymore. Pads are a serious no-go during the summer, so after a ton of research, I found this, and it arrived on the day my period started! I’ve tried discs in the past, but they were too large and kept slipping out. This disc goes in easily (after a little trial and error) and stays put. Even on my super heavy days, it doesn’t leak and I only need to dump it once or twice. The size is deceptive-this thing holds A LOT. If you have a mega-low cervix like me and nothing else has worked, this one might be the key!
OMG this is the best purchase I’ve ever made yes the startup fee can be pricey I could not take it out long enough for a photo. I am only 14 and 90 pounds but I went with the big disc an I really thought my flow was light to moderate but this disc said different I have to empty it out every 2 hours or so. The firmness is perfect and overall I would perches again

Ok. So. Very large insertion. My best trick is to use 2 hand's. don’t get frustrated with u don’t get it in all the way the first time or even the tenth. I would highly recommend trying it before you start your shark week to get comfortable with it and totally worth the price.
I started out with Flex reusable. I love the firmness of the rim and the notch that makes it easy to fold but the body of the disc is too soft. It slides around in there. Anytime I pee and readjust, I try to find it and it's slipped all the way to the back. If it's a heavy flow day, and only lasts 4 hours and I have to change it in the porta potty at work. Not too cool.
I still use the flex disc on light days because of ease of insertion and how comfortable it is to insert and use.
I was out of town and my period hit. I did not want to buy a box of tampons for 2 days. Very wasteful. I decided to try the Saalt disc. Now I understand why menstrual disks are so excellent! I have very heavy periods and an IUD. The body of this disc is very firm. It even makes a crunching sound when you fold it. This is what my 44-year-old body needed. If you are over 40 and have had a child, this is the disc for you! I thought that the pull tab would be annoying but it is incredibly helpful. I could keep this thing in forever and forget about it. Even on super heavy days I have zero leakage. It is a little tougher to insert than other discs, but it is well worth it because the wear time is excellent.

The size and flexibility of this disc are amazing! I had trouble with a larger disc like the hello go. And this one is a perfect size. The one major downside and why 4stars is that this disc is kind of hard to remove. The grip under ledge doesn’t help you take out the disc at all in my experience. I have to put my finger into the top edge/lip of the disc and remove it which definitely causes a bit of a mess (which I don’t mind too much since I change my disc at home) otherwise very happy with this disc! NEVER GOING BACK TO TAMPONS
After I’ve gotten used to a few different discs, this one is a bit too big/firm for my liking. The size would be fine if softer/ the firmness would be fine if smaller
this is so hard to remove, it is very stressful. i tried it for a couple months and did not get used to it. i used gloves for traction.
i am going to go back to disposable disks until I have the motivation to try to find another reusable option.
