Why Your Business Should Stock Free Period Supplies
Did you know that 85% of women and people who menstruate will get their period in public unexpectedly and without supplies on hand?
Periods are unpredictable. The chances of starting one while away from home are high, and the consequences of being caught unprepared at work or while out running errands are more significant than most people realize. Business owners can and should support their customers and employees by stocking period supplies in their restrooms.
The Case Is Simple
Think about what your restrooms already stock: toilet paper, hand soap, paper towels, maybe tissues or hand sanitizer. These are considered the baseline, the bare minimum required to help someone answer nature's call with dignity. If you've ever walked into a stall without toilet paper, you know exactly how miserable that experience is. Nobody argues "you should always carry your own just in case," because where there's a toilet, there should be toilet paper.
So why aren't pads and tampons offered with the same faithfulness? Periods are natural and can arrive without warning. Millions of us have resorted to folding single-ply public restroom tissue into a makeshift pad just to get through the next hour without a stain or an emergency exit.
Stocking period supplies isn't charity. It's just good business.
The Business Case Goes Beyond Goodwill
The cost of not supporting menstruating employees and customers is real and measurable. 56% of women have missed work due to their period, contributing to an estimated $9.6 billion in lost productivity annually. And it's not just absenteeism. 80.7% of menstruating workers report reduced productivity while still showing up to work, averaging 23.2 days of impaired performance per year, with a mean total productivity loss of nearly 9 days annually.
Access to period supplies is one of the smallest, lowest-cost interventions a business can make, and it directly addresses one of the most common reasons employees cut their day short or customers leave early.
Keeping It Local Matters More Than You Think
When you order from Period Nirvana, your dollars do more than buy period supplies. Up to $73 of every $100 spent at a small business stays in the local community, cycling back through local wages, vendors, and reinvestment. Compare that to a big box retailer, which returns as little as 14% of its revenue to the local economy, mostly in the form of payroll, with the rest flowing to out-of-state suppliers and shareholders. Online orders fare no better. When you click "add to cart" on Amazon, nearly all of that money leaves Asheville immediately. Shopping local is one of the simplest ways a business can reinvest in the community it profits from. Ordering your period supplies from a West Asheville shop means your supply budget supports a local team, a local storefront, and a local mission.
The contrast is sharp: 73 cents on the dollar stays local vs. as little as 14 cents at big box. That's a compelling line you could also pull out for social captions or a graphic if you want to promote the post on Instagram.
FAQ
Won't customers steal them?
Statistically, people offered free period products only take what they need. Could someone occasionally take extra? Yes, and you can choose to see that as helping someone who truly needed it. To keep it manageable, we recommend keeping fewer than 10 of each product out at a time and restocking from back stock as needed.
Why should I pay for someone else's period?
Because it's basic human decency, and your business earns real goodwill for it. It keeps employees present for their full shift and keeps customers in your space longer rather than bolting home due to an emergency. It's a win/win.
You already budget for toilet paper, soap, and paper towels as a cost of doing business. Period products are simply another line item in that same category, one that makes your space more inclusive and your customers and staff feel genuinely supported.
In an ideal world, period products would be universally free or government-subsidized. Until then, businesses can step up for the people who walk through their doors every day.
How many do I need to buy per month?
Period Nirvana is here to help supply small businesses with fewer than five bathrooms to stock. We recommend starting with 30 per product and monitoring how quickly they move before your next restock. High-volume businesses may be better served by a commercial account provider, though we'll always advocate for quality over the cheapest available option. If you are high volume and still want to order from Period Nirvana we can always discuss a custom order and volume discounts, though the lead times may be slightly longer. Email us with your inquiry flo@periodnirvana.com, we'd love to help you shop local!
Can I order cheaper products elsewhere?
You can, and we understand that budgets are real. Period Nirvana carries bulk organic pads and organic tampons with plant-based applicators because these align with our own values. We wouldn't supply products that our employees wouldn't feel comfortable using themselves. We also offer scaled pricing, so the more you buy, the lower the per-unit cost. Ordering from us keeps locally earned dollars circulating in the Asheville community.
Do you supply the container?
For smaller businesses, we carry compact white plastic containers sized to fit tampons and pads neatly on a toilet tank and these are priced affordably. If you'd prefer a wall-mounted dispenser or a basket that matches your bathroom's aesthetic, that works too. There are plenty of great options out there, and we encourage you to have fun with it.
Do you offer delivery or subscriptions?
This program is new and growing. We currently offer free delivery to businesses in West Asheville within a 5-minute drive of our store at 315 Haywood Rd. Email us at flo@periodnirvana.com to request delivery or ask about your zone. If you're outside our delivery radius, local pickup is always available, or we can ship directly to you. We'll expand our delivery area as demand grows.
What if I want to stock supplies but can't afford it?
Period Nirvana's Community Fund exists for exactly this situation. If you believe period products should be freely accessible but stocking them isn't currently in the budget, fill out our request form. As the fund allows, we'll reach out to let you know when a supply is available for your business.
